The History Museum has three distinct areas.
The archaeological section in the basement describes the life of people in this territory even before the town was founded, from the first prehistoric settlers to those of the Middle Ages, via the Gallo-Roman world that has left so many traces. Between the Vosges and the Jura, the Territoire de Belfort, a place of trade, commerce and war, is a dense and rich archaeological zone that is still little known.
The Bartholdi-Lefèvre area on the ground floor showcases two sculptors of great importance to Belfort's collections. The rooms give pride of place to Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), sculptor of the Lion of Belfort, and Camille Lefèvre (1853-1933), a major donor. Six rooms are devoted to their collections of sculptures, paintings, engravings and old photographs.
The historical section on the first floor evokes Belfort's civil and military past from the time of Vauban's intervention, and in particular the various memorabilia linked to the defence of the town during the siege of 1870, including the personal effects of Colonel Aristide Denfert-Rochereau, who gloriously defended the town.

1 October to 31 March: 2pm to 6pm except Tuesdays.
1 April to 30 June and September: 10 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 6.30 pm except Tuesdays.
July-August: daily from 10 am to 12.30 pm and from 2 pm to 6.30 pm.
Annual closures: 1 November, 25 December and 1 January.
