Details

Today, the Mobiles cemetery remains discreet, but history would have it otherwise! During the siege of 1870-1871, numerous bombardments made access to the town's cemetery impossible: the Brasse cemetery. As the number of burials increased, the area known as Le Pré Gaspard (now the Mobiles cemetery), located on the slope of the Justice hill, was chosen as the final resting place for the deceased. Today, 956 Mobiles are buried there. For more than 40 years, the Mobiles cemetery was the site of all the patriotic commemorations. The Vosges sandstone obelisk in the centre of the cemetery was the monument that paid tribute to the defenders of Belfort. However, Bartholdi's sculpture took over this function and became the emblem of Belfort. Since then, the Cimetière des Mobiles has lost some of its visibility, but it remains a historic landmark.
