THE FRIENDS OF THE ORGAN AND MUSIC OF BELFORT Concert for the reopening of Belfort Cathedral THE ORGAN OF ENLIGHTENMENT Claude Balbastre, the Dijon manuscript, 1749 Jean-Charles Ablitzer, on the historical organ In 1749, the construction of the church of Saint-Christophe (then the collegiate church of Saint-Denis) was completed. Jean Baptiste Waltrin and his companions began building the organ, commissioned by the town council. That same year, a young man of 25, Claude Balbastre, organist at Dijon Cathedral, signed a manuscript containing 40 pieces for the organ. Recently discovered, the work contained in this manuscript, known as the Dijon manuscript or the Versailles manuscript, which refers to the library where it was kept, is in some ways the archetype of the emerging style of the Enlightenment, heir to the science of writing of the Grand Siècle but freed from the sometimes severe polyphonic straitjacket of yesteryear.
