Les Archives départementales : 100 ans d’histoire
Les Archives départementales : 100 ans d’histoire
Details
The Departmental Archives were created throughout France by the law of 5 brumaire an V (26 October 1796), with a repository in each departmental capital. For Belfort and the surrounding area, the departmental capital was Colmar, as we were then part of the Haut-Rhin department.
The initial aim of creating the Archives was a legal one: to give citizens access to administrative documents so that they could exercise their rights as citizens. But historians quickly seized on this mass of documents as a basis for their historical research. Individuals then used the Archives to reconstruct their genealogy and family history. The Departmental Archives are the repositories of the legal, institutional and personal history of the people of the Territoire de Belfort.
