The work, composed in 1724 in Leipsic (Germany) and revised by the composer in 1725, 1739 and 1749, operatically describes Christ's last days, his trial and judgment, and his final hours of agony. Bach comments on the narrative with chorales and arias, giving his own take on the biblical story.
