Henri Japy (1848- 1935) : De la conformité patronale au progressisme social
Details
In partnership with the Culture & Voyages workshop at LA MAISON in Beaucourt. With the participation of Pierre Lamard, professor of industrial history at the Université de Technologie de Belfort Montbéliard and "Japy" specialist.
At the end of the 19th century, this Arts et Manufactures engineer, statutory manager of Japy-Frères et Cie and director of the watchmaking company, the flagship of Beaucourt's industries, was at the heart of a fierce legal battle with his cousin Gaston Japy, another statutory manager. A victim of family ostracism and brutal marginalisation within the company, Henri Japy was branded red and retired to Paris, leaving behind the image of a multi-faceted man and a boss open to new social ideas.
The aim of the conference is not only to look back at the major strikes of 1899 and the ensuing trial, but also to take a closer look at this great employer, man and citizen. Marginal or precursor, Henri Japy remains without question an outstanding personality who should no longer be ignored.
