"Fake news uses the same mechanisms as magic tricks, both of which exploit our cognitive flaws by deceiving our attention and vigilance. These are two examples of proven fakes that nevertheless produce an impression of truth". Gustave Kuhn, Director of the Magic Lab (Department of Psychology, University of London). In Géométrie Variable, Matthieu Villatelle uses magic to explore the mechanisms of fake news. He draws a parallel between mentalists and digital giants, all experts in manipulating our attention. Through a series of magical experiments that shake up our relationship with the truth, Géométrie Variable sows confusion and questions our critical faculties and free will.
"With this new project, Géométrie Variable, I want to question what underpins the veracity of information: how do you create an impression of truth and then share false information? How do you trap the viewer's critical mind? Géométrie Variable will deploy mechanisms similar to those at work in fake news in order to question the public and awaken an awareness of doubt and free will.
