CIE UNE POIGNÉE D'IMAGES The Ramayana is a mythological epic originating in India and telling the legend of Rama, the 7th avatar of Vishnu. The text is based on oral tradition and was composed between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD by the poet Valmiki. Written in Sanskrit, the sacred language of Hinduism, the Ramayana is one of the greatest ancient epics of world literature. It consists of 7 books, containing 24,000 verses. There are several versions in the countries of Southeast Asia. Rama, the crown prince who was ousted from the throne by one of his father's wives, is forced into an exile of fourteen years during which he lives as an ascetic in the forest of Dandaka. Rama was accompanied in this ordeal by his wife Sita and Lak?ma?a, one of his three brothers. During this exile, the two brothers accomplished many feats and with the help of Hanuman, the divine monkey, they defeated Ravena, the monster who had kidnapped his wife. The exhibition includes many shadows, puppets, but also masks from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma or India from the collection of the Puppet Theatre of Belfort and brought back from the various trips of the director in Southeast Asia.
