The museums of Belfort and the Territoire de Belfort

A showcase for the cultural wealth of the department, the museums of the city of Belfort and the Territoire de Belfort offer a fascinating array of options with something to please young and old alike.

In Belfort…

Musée d'Art Moderne

Located in the heart of the city, the Museum of Modern Art is housed in a former mansion built in the late 19th century. Its collection consists of the Jardot donation, a prestigious assembly of more than 100 works by great modern painters, including Picasso, Léger and Braque.

These pieces were all acquired through the extraordinary gift of Maurice Jardot, a native of the region, to the city of Belfort: "an aficionado's selection...in tribute to D. H. Kahnweiler".
Visitors can now use free audio guides in French, English and German to discover the collection and the life of Maurice Jardot and Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, key players in the history of modern art.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

The fine arts collection of the city of Belfort is on display in the ring-shaped room of tower 41. The unique architecture of the site—a pentagon—enables the organisation of the 150 works into five themes. Thus the 350m² of space are devoted to allegories, religious paintings, nature, portraits and Camille Lefèvre (1853-1933), a contemporary sculptor and painter who was a friend to Rodin and Dalou and who bequeathed his own works and private collection to the city.

History Museum and Bartholdi Museum Space

The Musée de Belfort, created in 1872 by the Société Belfortaine d'Émulation, is designed around archeological vignettes: a reflection of daily life in the region in prehistoric times (burial caves in Cravanche),

espace bartholdi

during the period of invasions (burgonde necropolis in Bourogne), the Roman conquest (Offremong pottery workshop and Bavilliers"villa") and souvenirs of the military figures who defended Belfort countless times (General Lecourbe's sword, personal effects of Denfert-Rochereau).

In February 2011, as part of the Belfort Lion's birthday celebration and as a tribute to its creator, the city decided to establish permanent displays for the history museum's six rooms. The resulting Bartholdi Museum Space is dedicated to statuary and serves up a variety of sculptures, engravings, old photographs, archives and original documents.
