Measuring just 609 km², the Territoire de Belfort in northern Franche-Comté is the smallest administrative department in France outside the Paris metropolitan area. With its ideal location near both Switzerland and Alsace and just 40 minutes from the Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg airport, the Territoire de Belfort is planted firmly in the axis of a major roadway which links northern Europe to Spain. This puts the department right at the intersection of the European travel paths that will soon be accessible via the Rhine-Rhône TGV train.
