VisuelThe Mille Etangs

Like Territoire de Belfort, the other departments of Franche-Comté—Haute-Saône, Doubs and Jura—are rich in tradition, culture, history and activities. Explore UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Besançon citadel and the saltworks in Arc-et-Senans and, more recently, Salins-les-Bains. On the approach to Territoire de Belfort, in the Haute-Saône department, visit the Ronchamp Chapel designed by world-famous architect Le Corbusier and meander through the Plateau des Mille Etangs, whose "thousand lakes" offer up a mosaic of colours. Meanwhile, the Pays de Montbéliard is just a stone's throw away... Uncover the history of the dukes of Wurtemberg inside their ancient estate. The château harbours historical, archaeological and contemporary collections. Admire the bountiful array of cars on display at the Peugeot Museum in Sochaux. Further south, get to know Jura wines by driving along the Route des Vins. Open your eyes to all the wonders and wealth which surround our fine region.

Between the Vosges, hills and plains, Alsace boasts plenty of natural assets: mere steps from Territoire de Belfort, ramble through its southern district of Sundgau.

Further north, connect with the Route des Vins, where you will delight in sampling the major Alsatian varietals with their floral, fruity or spicy aromas. Visit the many villages which typify this colourful region: Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé, Eguisheim...

Be surprised by its must-see attractions: the famous Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle overlooking the town of Sélestat, the Alsace Ecomuseum and the Cité du Train railroad museum in Alsace. And do not overlook the picturesque charms of its cities: Strasbourg and its majestic cathedral or Colmar and the Unterlinden Museum.

At Christmas time, remember to fan out into the various open-air markets and enjoy their living Nativity scenes and Alsatian legends brought to life! The scents of mulled wine and bredele biscuits will greet and guide you throughout your peregrinations.

Between Germany and Switzerland

Territoire de Belfort is also enhanced by its border position: with access to Germany and Switzerland, openness comes second nature. Take advantage of it to soak up neighbouring cultures, drink in the magnificent landscapes of Switzerland and visit Basel and its remarkable museums. In the south of the department, just beyond Delle, explore the rich heritage of the city of Porrentruy and travel along its clock-making trail. In the same area, fall under the spell of the medieval town of Sainte Ursanne.

Lounge on the banks of the Rhône-to-Rhine canal and float right into Germany and its Black Forest for a romantic sojourn at Lake Titisee, which is famous for the crystal-clear colour of its waters. Take a break in the historic city centre of Freiburg-im-Breisgau, an internationally recognised pioneer in sustainable urban development.
